The Mission

From this blog I will be embarking on a quest to explore the wonder world of Rift: a new MMO from Trion games.

For those of you who don't know, a "MMO" is a massively multiplayer online game (also known as a "MMORPG" [Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game]). It is pretty much the nerdiest genre of video games. The most popular MMO out there right now is WoW (World of Warcraft) with most other games not being able to come close to the amount of polish it offers or the amount of subscribers that currently pay to play the game. Rift is trying to change that.

Before I talk more about the genre of MMO and it's characteristics I will start by telling you more about why I've started this blog. It is for my research writing class. My writing class about video games. I'll give you a moment to get over your initial burst of jealousy...or not since most of the people reading this will be my professor and classmates (hey guys!). The project requires us to play a video game over the course of the semester and blog at least once a week about our experiences. We get to pick the game and the only requirement is that it must have some sort of online presence (like a prevalent fan community..i think) and it must be something we've never played. I've been looking at RIFT for awhile and decided that this was perfect timing since the next beta event starts...tomorrow and it meets the requirements perfectly.

As of right now the only thing I know about this game is what I've seen in youtube videos and the wikipedia so my blog will be me sharing my experiences as I journey through a completely new world. Please. Contain your excitement.

Well. Class is pretty much over. I'll blog more about MMOs and Rift later when the inspiration strikes.

See you on the other side!
